Plumbing Fixtures

One of the most common applications for non-metallic washers is for plumbing fixtures. This is because non-metallic materials feature exceptional resistance to water, corrosion, and temperature changes, ensuring that parts do not deform or leak when exposed to heat or excessive moisture. Teflon™ PTFE washers produced by New Process are often found in toilets, shower heads, faucets, and other plumbing fixtures.

Non-Metallic Materials for Plumbing Fixtures

Metal washers have traditionally been used for plumbing applications, but non-metallic alternatives offer the same level of performance at a lower cost. Two common non-metallic materials used are Nylon 6 and Teflon™ PTFE.

Nylon 6

Like most metals, Nylon 6 features good wear resistance, a high tensile strength, durability, and good elasticity. However, unlike metals, Nylon 6 can resist exposure to alkalis, dilute acids, and oxidizing agents. The impact strength and energy absorption capabilities of Nylon 6 actually improve as moisture absorption occurs, but the tensile strength and stiffness of the material decreases. New Process can combine Nylon with glass or carbon fibres to compensate for these side-effects and improve the mechanical and thermal performance for plumbing applications.

Teflon™ PTFE

Teflon™ PTFE is highly resistant to most chemicals, high temperatures, and fluids. In fact, it can operate at temperatures up to 600 degrees F without deformation, making it useful for hot water applications. It is particularly ideal for plumbing applications due to its complete impermeability to water and oil (plumber’s tape is actually made from Teflon™ PTFE for this reason).

Like Nylon 6, it can be combined with various fibres to improve its mechanical properties.

New Process Capabilities

New Process has an unlimited supply of materials and over 8,000 compound washer dies in stock and ready for use, with no additional tooling charges.

Teflon™ PTFE washers can be produced in thicknesses of 0.0002” to 0.125” and diameters ranging from 0.093” to 16”. Nylon washers can be fabricated with thicknesses of 0.010” to 0.125” and diameters from 0.093” to 16”.
